Last night Andrew Chan and Myuran Sukumaran were executed by firing squad.
Leading up to their deaths, Amnesty International ran a Mercy Campaign urging the Indonesian government to show mercy.
The bible has something to say about Mercy.
Micah 6:8 says: “What does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
Luke 6:36: “Be merciful just as your Father is merciful.”
We show mercy because our heavenly father has shown endless mercy to us.
2 Samuel 24:14 – “let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.”
Psalms 86:5 – For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy to all them that call on you.
Ephesians 2:4 -But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love with which he loved us
And ultimately, we show mercy because God showed us abundant mercy by sending his only son Jesus to die for our sins.
Despite the sadness of the last 24 hours there has also been much rejoicing. The Sydney Morning Herald wrote and article about the moments before the execution of the men.
It wrote of the men singing “Amazing Grace” and the firing squad fired their guns. It also quoted Pastor Karina de Vega who said “It was breathtaking. This was the first time I witnessed someone so excited to meet their God.”
As I pray for the families of those executed, I also pray that I will be like these men. May I be so overjoyed to meet my God. – Will you pray with me?
